IASTM

IASTM or instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization is an advanced soft tissue technique. Chiropractic Physicians have always used their hands (as the main ways of treatment)to increase blood flow and break up adhesions in soft tissue (mainly muscles), in some cases hands alone can’t treat or clearly detect adhesions (usually in deeper layer muscles) hence, came the need for an advanced tool system. currently,  several companies have now developed handheld tools to perform instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization.

When it comes to IASTM, there are multiple variations with respect to the different tools used.  Most of them have a set of 5-7 stainless steel instruments of various shapes and sizes. Though many different materials have been used to make the instruments—wood, ceramics, plastics, stone— stainless steel appears to be the best. Numerous  studies showed the superior effectiveness of the IASTM technique when compered to other soft tissue techniques.

IASTM has two main uses: to break up densities in soft tissue and to initiate the first-stage healing. the first stage of healing involves white blood cells which allow the formation of new collagen tissue (the body´s repair mechanism)  The IASTM technique mildly re-injurers the area which then triggers the body´s own healing process. without this technique the body starts building up scar tissue which restricts motion and decreases overall function.

Since the IASTM technique reinitiate first-stage healing (essentially re-injuring the area )patients usually report mild discomfort during the procedure and bruising afterward.
